Illuminated manuscripts

Illuminated manuscripts are ancient documents that have been hand copied and are often beautifully illustrated, generally on a religious theme.

While most illuminated manuscripts were written in Latin, one of the oldest examples of an illuminated manuscript are the Ethiopian Garima Gospels were written in the Ge'ez language. The Ge'ez langauge is the basis of Anharic, Ethiopia's national language.
