Middle English

Middle English was the form of the English language spoken from approximatley 1150 A.D. to 1470 A.D.  The Norman Conquest of England by William the Conqueror had just taken place in 1066 A.D. Writers from this period include Roger Bacon (1214 A.D. - 1294 A.D.) whose Opus majus (Major Work), was written in Medieval Latin at the request of Pope Clement IV, and explains the scope of his work.

An example of Middle English would include the works of Geoffrey Chaucer, author of The Canterbury Tales. The Centerbury Tales are a collection of stories between 1387 and 1400 told by a group of pilgrims on their way to Canterbury, England to visit the shrine of St. Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathdral. To read the works translated into modern English (much easier to read than Middle English), visit http://english.fsu.edu/canterbury/

Another author, Geoffrey Chaucer, 1340 A.D. - 1400 A.D. is known for writing the Canterbury Tales, a collection of 24 stories told by travelers on a pilgrimage from London to Canterbury to visit the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket.
